Learning Intentions
Grade 3:
I can determine the value of each digit in a natural number.
I can round natural numbers to various places.
Grade 4:
I can determine the value of each digit in a number, including tenths and hundredths.
I can round numbers to various places, including tenths.
This week in Math, we continued our Place Value unit and became rounding experts! We started by reviewing how to identify the different place values in a number and then learned a strategy to help us round numbers with confidence.
Students practiced finding and underlining their “target” place value—the place we are rounding to. We learned that the digits to the left of our target stay the same, while the digits to the right become zeros. The digit immediately behind our target is the important one—it helps us decide whether to round up or round down!
There has been lots of practice and perseverance this week! Students worked through rounding problems together on their whiteboards, explaining their thinking and learning from one another. Today, they put their skills to the test with a “Show What You Know” exit slip to demonstrate what they have learned so far.
Learning Intentions
I can show gradations of tone are useful to show depth or the effect of light on objects.
I can increase details in the foreground and the illusion of depth and reality can be enhanced.
I can extend brush skills and further experimentation with the medium so as to achieve special effects such as textures.
I can mix paints to show intensity of colour.
This week we also worked hard to finish our art project for Art Card this year! We painted different streaky patterns, we mixed paint to create perfect shades and even created a “splatter zone” to add falling snow to our paintings. We are so proud of how they turned out and can’t wait to see them as a card!
